And I showed them, here's an issue of Black Belt magazine from two years prior to this; and here's a photo of me in that magazine from January 1976 right after I won it, holding the trophy. Was Sheldon the first person you shared it with?Frank Dux: Well, it was supposed to be a series. And it was a Xeroxed copy of a receipt, a copy that anyone could fabricate on a home copy machine. Like in South America it was called "Vale Tudo" and if the Japanese were running the event it was "Kumite San Soo," so this was a word that described them all.Blake Harris: That's interesting. Bloodsport was produced by Cannon Films and released by Warner Bros. on 26 February 1988. And I showed that in court. It made its budget back just the first weekend on the west coast. And on it he writes: To the Man Who Beat Me. I imagine that would be hard for you to prove, no?Frank Dux: Well, that part about me saying that the military ordered my record sabotaged? The government did not know how much he knew about other covert operations, he said, so they placed information in his file to destroy his credibility. Back when I first started working with Stallone, my agent had told me to bring an idea to pitch him for a script. Plus, Bloodsport's connection with Flagg made the dynamic even better. They wanted to stick with the Van Damme formula. The whole martial arts thing. There's a birth certificate and a death certificate for him. But yes, Idris Elba did an amazing job being the reluctant leader. These targets included the planned mining of a Nicaraguan port and the planned sabotage of certain Nicaraguan installations including power stations and weapons depots, codenamed OPERATION CORDOBA HARBOR. I'm not quite sure why they ended up hiring other writers to do a different version of it but they did and then that became a bone of contention later on where Frank ended up suing Jean-Claude and saying Jean-Claude had promised him some big chunk of the profit participation from the movie. I told Jean-Claude I might be getting the rights back to Corsican Brothers so he got Moshe on board. With Bloodsport and Deadshot picking up each other weapons in battle. The film is partly based on unverified claims made by martial artist Frank Dux. But he had a great imagination, he had good ideas and he knew the martial arts world pretty well. And was that something that you and Jean-Claude consciously tried to deliver (or to avoid)?Sheldon Lettich: We tried to do something atypical with Lionheart. What I said to them [the LA Times] was that the only way you could get a hold of my records was to go to Federal Intelligence Court. We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Why was that the case?Sheldon Lettich: Because Menahem thought it was terrible. It's a tale so amazing that two months after the film's release, it was dismissed by the L.A. And he just started laughing and he says, "Frank, you're crazy. Both of them wanted to be the cop.Blake Harris: That's so funny (though it makes sense).Sheldon Lettich: It just couldn't be worked out so the project fell by the wayside until they got Stallone and Wesley Snipes to be in it. Do you recognize the guy all the way on the right? Thndrcougarfalcnbird. I buy you dinner tonight." And that's one of the things that were attractive about Rambo so that's what we did with that script.Blake Harris: And what was it like working with Rambo himself?Sheldon Lettich: I was just so honored. We're 60 stories in the air, I'm not kidding you. It was a no-budget. Do you see what I'm saying? So you have to get everyone on the same page and agree to make this movie. So we had a number of people come to my apartment; John would test them out for their acting abilities and we would also try to determine if they were for real.Blake Harris: In what sense?Sheldon Lettich: Oh, I just meant we'd try to determine if they were really Vietnam veterans. I walked over there and he threw a playful kick at my head. And we made money on that film. DuBois' Bloodsport first appeared in Superman Vol 2 #4 by John Byrne back in 1987. Everything you've just been telling me about this Kumite, that's a great idea for a movie. Because believe it or not, Robert DuBois truly was the man known for shooting the Man of Steel with a bullet in DC canon. We do it your way. Because this is what happened next Sheldon Lettich: So they sent me to Paris and Corsica to do research and I re-wrote The Corsican Brothers, which I was going to direct. We liked the fact that we were able to do something different there. A franchise was the idea. "The fact that Frank hasn't been involved with any movie since 1994 says something doesn't it? We Hate Movies podcast did Timecop for one of their eps, and likewise, it is one of their best eps. I think what happened in reality was more interesting, but you have a limited amount of time to tell a story and it has to resonate with the audience, you know? Which was Mike's move. What was all this camaraderie about? And, at that lunch, Mark agreed and hired me to write the script for Bloodsport.Blake Harris: Frank mentioned he already had a script? Blake Harris: What was the scripting process like for Rambo III, working with Stallone?Sheldon Lettich: He and I were pretty much on the same wavelength for that. Around this time, Leon Isaac Kennedy [from The White House All Stars] had been in in a Chuck Norris movie called Lone Wolf McQuade and there was talk about doing a Part Two. Sheldon wrote Legionnaire and was supposed to direct it, but then Jean-Claude got someone else. You can't just go in there and get it. I actually got to take my mother for the first time to see the film. He was born with all sorts of birth defectshe had one leg shorter than the other, he didn't have a jawboneand because of my own, I don't know, "disability," we became friends. Jean-Claude was doing movies for Columbia and they wanted him to bring them some ideas for movies and we brought that idea to them. For me, martial arts is just a release. However, speaking of the UFC, Frank Dux does have a tangential connection to the UFC. All of this was prior to Bloodsport. And he ends up doing a test of speed with this guy named Vic Moore. "Bloodsport" follows Frank Dux, an American martial artist serving in the military, who decides to leave the army to compete in a martial arts tournament in Hong Kong where fights to the death can occur. They did sequels and I've never gotten paid for them when I was supposed to. If he doesn't have any use for people, he throws them to the side. Okay, try him out. As a result, he's spent the past 28 years dealing with perpetual allegations of being a fake and a fraud. And we never had a fight from that point on. So I ended up writing that script for him. And as soon as he was back in LA, he gave me a call and came over to my apartment in Park La Brea. So I thought that it was a good idea to keep my options open. And a lot of those worked well when Jean-Claude recut it.Blake Harris: I suspect that part of the reason they worked is because you, based on your experiences, were able to bring a certain authenticity to it.Frank Dux: I think so too. KUMITE! And Tanaka was well known. Neither of them was about a martial arts tournament, and neither of them was ever produced. "But I will say this," Lettich continued. So I climbed up on the ledge with him. And I said, "If you're gonna go, just don't pull me with you." Which kind of made Grant feel better about himself. Give me your best shot. She'd never seen it. And one of those people was Sylvester Stallone, who had put the word out that he was looking for someone to help him write Rambo III. We even made a movie together, my 16mm short Firefight, which I gave him a major role in. I never said that. I felt bad for him.Blake Harris: Actually, if you don't mind, I have one more question for you.Frank Dux: Sure.Blake Harris: We've spent all of this time talking about your life as a fighter and portrayals of your life as a fighter. But I thought you said Menahem still wasn't fully sold on Jean-Claude.Sheldon Lettich: He wasn't. And I just want to end it right now." Like, very famously, he turned down Demolition Man. So I go in to pitch my idea and his development executive, she was just flabbergasted when I showed her the magazine cover and told her about the idea. Another thing was that had I co-directed The Quest with Jean-Claude, it might have contributed to a mistaken notion that Jean-Claude co-directed Lionheart and Double Impact with me. And basically what happens is I told the story to Sheldon. And I'll never forgetand I'm terrified of heights, by the way. They each got three chances to punch (and block) one another. These guys, after brutally going at each other, now they were just laughing it off. And so yeah. And tears started to form in my eyes. Nobody clapped for Sheldon. But what's crazy is almost everything he says in that interview is an outright lie or a distortion.Blake Harris: I've interviewed a lot of people in my timeincluding a lot of people I believe were trying to sell me on liesbut I never got the sense from Frank that he was trying to put one over on me.
